Material Study — Tension as Structure
Tension plays a significant role in how fibre behaves structurally. Small adjustments in stitch density and directional pull can change the way a form curves, opens or holds itself in space.
Rather than hiding these variations, the studio often works with them directly as part of the construction process.
Soft Structure
Unlike rigid frameworks, crochet allows structure to remain flexible and responsive. Forms continue to shift slightly depending on weight distribution, suspension and fibre behaviour.
This instability is not treated as failure but as part of the object’s identity.
Surface and Compression
Changes in compression create subtle surface movement across many pieces. Areas of tighter construction generate density and shadow, while looser sections allow expansion and softness.
These transitions help create rhythm within otherwise minimal forms.
Material studies like these often inform both the Strata and Aerial Forms collections.
